In the August 26th issue of the Silicon Valley Business Journal, JC Young Construction was named one of the top 20 LGBT businesses in the Bay Area. On page 14 of this issue, Jill Young, the owner is interviewed by Lynn Peithman Stock.
Jill attributes much of her success as a general contractor to knowing how to deal with people. At an event full of people, Jill's smile will light up the room. Her personal demeanor, ability to talk with anyone, and her genuine interest in people makes her likeable in every way.
The owner of JC Young Construction has her certification with the NGLCC (National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce). This certification can be added to the many other diversity certifications she holds - Woman Minority Business Enterprise (WMBE), Small Business (SB), Woman Owned Small Business, among others.
It's not so much the certifications that make the difference, it's the fact that she is out and proud of who she is. Jill believes the community needs successful business leaders that represent minority groups. She exudes confidence and is a role model for young people who are chasing success. Jill jokingly calls herself a triple threat - I'm black, I'm a woman, and I'm gay. "Do you still want to work with me?"
Although it might seem like three difficult obstacles to overcome, Jill has certainly done it. The fact is most people do want to work with her. She's a hustler; she truly cares about her customers; and she will do whatever it takes to deliver a finished product people love.
It's no surprise JC Young Construction won this award. And I'm sure there will be more to come in the future.
